The Hatter opened his eyes very wide on hearing this; but all he SAID was, `Why is a raven like a writing-desk?'

`Come, we shall have some fun now!' thought Alice. `I'm glad they've begun asking riddles.--I believe I can guess that,' she added aloud.

`Do you mean that you think you can find out the answer to it?' said the March Hare.

`Exactly so,' said Alice.

`Then you should say what you mean,' the March Hare went on.

`I do,' Alice hastily replied; `at least--at least I mean what I say--that's the same thing, you know.'

`Not the same thing a bit!' said the Hatter. `You might just as well say that "I see what I eat" is the same thing as "I eat what I see"!'

`You might just as well say,' added the March Hare, `that "I like what I get" is the same thing as "I get what I like"!'

`You might just as well say,' added the Dormouse, who seemed to be talking in his sleep, `that "I breathe when I sleep" is the same thing as "I sleep when I breathe"!'

You don't have to be a Mad Hatter or a March Hare to care about accuracy and detail - for readers of technical literature, the lack of sufficient and accurate details often means that the work is either difficult to use, or of no value at all.

In some fields, attention to detail makes the difference between an average work and a really superior one. A novelist who spends time on painstaking details in the story will probably produce a more impressive work than someone who just relies on general memory and impressions. But for technical writing, attention to detail is an essential part of the work – without it, you don’t even have an average document – you have a useless one.

Attention to detail includes the following:

  • Noticing gaps in the information – insisting on getting enough information to write a coherent and logically consistent piece
  • Paying attention to consistency in language and typographic conventions Verifying the accuracy of information

The Problem

The following piece has flaws that need to be corrected – see if you can find them:

The Ajax Main window has four menus which allow you to conduct an analysis of the most recent data: File menu, Analysis menu, and Reports menu. After choosing the Import option from the menu, you can proceed to analysis. Activate Analyze Data and then wait for the results to appear. The results show you the start and end period, how many times the system exceeded the limits that you set, and the degree to which the limits were exceeded – see the figure. More details can be found later in the manual. To change the background color or scale of the report, use the Edit menu.
